Our Story
About Farmers Mutual
A mutual insurance company owned by the Pennsylvanians it protects — since April 6, 1876.
Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Western Pennsylvania was formed on April 6, 1876, by a group of local businessmen with a simple idea: provide dependable fire coverage for their own community. At year-end, the officers would assess each policyholder a premium based on the year’s losses and the company’s expenses — neighbors sharing risk, the way mutual insurance was meant to work.
1876 — Founded to protect our neighbors
Farmers Mutual of McCandless Township begins writing fire and wind coverage, sold by our own directors, for families in Allegheny, Butler, and Beaver Counties.
1977 — Merger with German Mutual
We merged with German Mutual Insurance Company of Zelienople, began marketing combination policies covering both property and liability, and adopted the independent agent system that still serves our policyholders today.
1988 — Merger with Triumph Mutual
A merger with Triumph Mutual of Beaver County strengthened the company as we built our office building in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
Today — Butler, Pennsylvania
From our office in Butler, we protect homes, farms, rentals, and businesses across the Commonwealth through independent agencies in communities like yours.
From our humble beginnings, our philosophy has stayed intact: to provide the best possible products, service, and price to our policyholders, while maintaining a solid financial base.
